Nine out of 12 members out of the defunct National Working Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party have dissociated themselves from the suit filed by the former National Chairman of the party, Sen. Ali Modu Sheriff, against the party’s National Caretaker Chairman, Sen. Ahmed Makarfi.

They said that Sheriff didn’t seek their consent before filling the suit, adding that they remain committed to the actions taken at the party’s national convention in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

Pastor Anita Ebhodaghe has refuted claims that she has reconciled with the General Overseer of Christ Embassy, Pastor Chris Oyakhilome, and returned to the church.

Ebhodaghe, in a statement by her solicitors, Attwaters Jameson Hill, on February 8, had confirmed the dissolution of the clergywoman’s marriage with Oyakhilome, wherein she announced that she would drop Oyahkilome from her name henceforth.

Edo approves appointment of new Oba

The Edo State Government has approved the appointment of the Edaiken N’Uselu, His Royal Highness, Prince Eheneden Erediauwa, as the new Oba of Benin.
It explained that the approval was in line with Section 19 (1) of the Traditional Rulers and Chiefs Law, 1979 (as amended), adding that the appointment takes effect from ‎April 29, 2016.

‘Tomato Ebola’ hits six states – Federal Government

The Federal Government on Tuesday said the pest, Tuta absoluta, popularly known as ‘Tomato Ebola’, which is responsible for the massive destruction of tomato in farmlands, had invaded six states in Nigeria.

It also disclosed that Nigeria spent about N80bn ($400m) annually importing tomato paste, adding that many of the imported products were substandard.

Federal Government seeks $166bn to fund energy, transport sectors

The Federal Government said on Monday that it would cost as much as $166bn in the next five years to provide infrastructure in energy and transport sectors of the economy.

It stated that the money could rise to $3.05tn in 30 years.

The Minister of Transportation, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi, gave the figures at the National Assembly in Abuja.

Economic and Financial Crimes Commission to get N8bn new head office.

The Federal Government will spend N7.912bn on a new head office for the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission this year.

The sum is part of the N18.887bn allocated to the commission in the 2016 Appropriation Act recently signed into law by President Muhammadu Buhari.

Details of the budget are currently on the website of the Budget Office.

80% of Kaduna tomatoes ravaged by disease, says El-Rufai

The Governor of Kaduna State, Mallam Nasir el-Rufai on Monday said 80 per cent of the tomato produced in the state had been ravaged by pests and diseases.

Specifically, the governor declared a state of emergency in tomato production in the state, saying all hands must be on deck to combat various pests and diseases ravaging tomato.

A customised Hummer H1 belonging to Tupac Shakur has sold for $337,114, according to Boston-based RR Auction. Court orders Federal Government, Okonjo-Iweala to account for Nigeria’s ‘missing N30trillion’

The Federal High Court in Lagos has ordered a former Minister of Finance, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, and the Federal Government to “provide information on the spending of the alleged missing N30 trillion which represents some accruable income to the Federal Government during the last four years of the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan.”

The judgment was delivered last week by Hon Justice Ibrahim Buba following a Freedom of Information suit number FHC/L/CS/196/2015 brought by the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP).

Nigeria faces recession as Gross Domestic Product shrinks

Nigeria’s economy risks falling into recession after it shrank in the first quarter of 2016 as outputs in the manufacturing, financial, real estate, oil and gas fell significantly.

The nation’s Gross Domestic Product, which measures the output of an economy, contracted by 0.36 per cent from a year earlier, the National Bureau of Statistics said in an emailed statement on Friday.

This compares with a Gross Domestic Product  growth rate of 2.11 per cent recorded in the last quarter of 2015.

WBO world welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao, 37, who retired from boxing to join politics won big when he got elected into the Philippines' senate on Thursday. 

He was declared among 12 new members of the upper house of Congress by the Philippine's elections commission.

Fuel subsidy, heavy yoke that could not continue —Tinubu

The National Leader of the All Progressives Congress, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, has urged Nigerians not to lament the removal of fuel subsidy, which he described as a heavy yoke that the government could not allow to linger.

The former Governor of Lagos State said for almost three decades, the country had entertained distortions in the downstream oil sector by operating an opaque system susceptible to manipulations and structured in a way that allowed a few people to gain mightily from the system and feed fat on the misery and frustration of millions of Nigerians.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has urged Justice Mojisola Olatoregun-Ishola of a Federal High Court in Lagos to dismiss a suit filed against it by a cousin of former President Goodluck Jonathan, Robert Azibaola.

Contrary to Azibaola’s claim in his suit, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission claimed that it was not detaining the ex-President’s cousin for the purpose of forcing him to implicate the former President.
